A domain renewal costs ten to twenty dollars a year. A lapsed domain costs the website, the email, and the organization's name, all at once, plus a redemption fee that commonly runs eighty to two hundred dollars if you catch it late, and the price of your own desperation if you do not. No other line in the budget buys as much protection for as little money, and no other lapse is as completely preventable.
Auto-renew is the first layer of that protection, and it fails silently the day the card behind it expires. The pattern repeats constantly: the domain was registered years ago under one person's account, the card was replaced, the renewal failed, and the warnings went to an address nobody reads. This quick win takes fifteen minutes, needs one login, and closes that gap for every domain you own. Next week's posts assume it is done.
Do this
Log in to your registrar, the company that holds your domain names. Last week's quick win showed how to find it at lookup.icann.org.
Open the domain list and confirm auto-renew is on for every domain. Turn it on where it is not.
Open billing. Check the card's expiration date. If it expires within twelve months, or belongs to a person rather than the organization, replace it with an organizational card now.
Add a backup payment method if the registrar supports one. It is the single setting that makes auto-renew survive a declined card.
If the primary domain expires inside a year, renew it several years ahead while you are logged in. Registrars allow up to ten; two to five years of runway is cheap insurance.
Write the renewal date, the card used, and the login email in your inventory.
Done looks like every domain showing auto-renew on, a card on file that will still be valid next year, a backup method added, and the renewal date written down somewhere other than the registrar.
What to expect
The card on file is often a former employee's or a founder's personal card; that is normal, and it is this quarter's most important fix. And at least one forgotten domain is usually in the list, still renewing. Leave it on today. Deciding what to keep is a different afternoon.
